Rattan has a natural bend and looseness, which makes it difficult to accurately install, leaves it at risk for damage and doesn’t make for an appealing product.

However, rattan can be processed to be more stiff, straight and easier to install.

This process is relatively simple, yet tedious and requires the use of handmade components to be done properly. The steps are below:

• Cut rattan to the desired size using scissors – preferably at least 1.5” longer and wider in order for the process to be done with the most ease.
• Soak the cut rattan pieces in warm water for at least 3 hours to allow the natural materials to loosen more and become easier to influence.
• Prepare a template board slightly larger (about .5”) than the final desired size of the rattan.
• Using applied pressure – via pressure clamps or another device of your choosing – push the template board against the rattan on an open surface to force the drying rattan to dry into place and shape.
• Allow at least 16 hours for rattan pieces to dry.
